Mayor Bloomberg has authorized what is effectively an eviction of the protesters for 7am this morning under the pretense of cleaning the park. In response, protesters cleaned the park themselves (though there are countless reports that it has been well-maintained) and Russell Simmons offered to pay for more cleaning himself. All signs are that the cleaning effort, spearheaded by the NYPD, will go on as planned. A petition has gone up here “in defense of the protesters and their First Amendment rights,” and supporters (Simmons among them) are arriving to occupy the park in the morning.  One hopes this will go better than the Protect The Flowers Offensive at #OccupyBoston this week.
